October 15, 2013… the holy day for Mosleem all over the world. Finished wukuf – the Hajj pilgrim season in Arafah, Saudi Arabia time of Eid al Adha decided. Some of us do prayer in Masjid or on the field after sunrise and arrange to sacrifice or slaughter a cow, goat or sheep. Eid al Adha honors Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael when God ordered him to do this. Just as Ibrahim was to kill Ishmael, God put a sheep on his place. Regardless this event is remembered at Eid al Adha, we complete obedience to the will of God, remind ourselves of own willingness to sacrifice anything to follow God’s commands. Symbol of the whole surrender to the God.
We captured this special moment in Perawang, a small city about 3 hours driving from Pekanbaru, Sumatera Indonesia. Once a year, when goats suddenly appeared on every street corner then bloody display shown in Al Huda Masjid, children watched around and adults did their job.
Six men did the work when slaughtering a big cow, this moments found difficult to watch. A sharp knife, neck piercing then craccckkkk!!! my own stomach turned queasy, Lets some photos speak to you…
They covered the head with leaves to protect the blood splash out. Look at him!
Entrail removed after skinning, people sat cross legged around each and cut the meat. Seperated the meat and fat also other parts such as bonnes or the ribs then went to weighing stop, some women scale per kilo into individual plastic bag. The meat is divided between the poor, family and friends. One-third of the meat goes to those who purchased it, another third goes to their relatives and friends, and the final third is distributed to the poor. Other Mosleems give money to charity to help poorer families and eat a meat based meal. Masjid or other groups may arrange communal meals as a special act of charity for the occasion. Plastic bag with the name labeled brought to bring home to cook ; satay, gulai, rendang are famous menu in Eid al Adha.
Some of people do slaugtering tomorrow, both goats and cow,s that will be coincides with world food day on October, 16th 2013 declared by Food Agriculture Organization of UN. Giving some of our wealth to the poor with Qurban meat (food) also provide the nutrition since the beef meat price too expensive for the poor and rarely eat the meat might be twice a year such as Mosleem days, Ied Raya and Adha. Yes we live in Indonesia, developing country with proverty level around 12% in 2012-2013, still have people who are very hunger. A good of charity at this moment, we have the power to against hunger.
Again Happy Eid al Adha to you ^^
